I grew up in Indianapolis cruising cul-du-sacs and jumping dirt piles on hardware store sting rays before graduating to Schwinn Collegiates and Super Tours. I worked in bike shops in high school and college and took up bike racing when I was 14, trying not to get dropped by all my college-age shop buddies on their group rides. I wasn’t old enough to be invited to be an extra when they filmed Breaking Away in Bloomington, but I went on to race Little 500 each of my four years at IU anyway. Since 1977, my first love has been road and track racing, but if it has two wheels and some pedals, I love to ride it whether it’s on the road, track, dirt, gravel, grass, snow, or any combination thereof. Mainly, being surrounded by a community that’s in love with bikes and all the freedoms they bring us brings me endless joy.

I rode a lot as a kid and young adult in college, but was primarily a runner then. I started riding more seriously in 2017, and racing in 2020, and primarily race road, though I love to do all sorts of racing. Some buddies and I started Gray Duck Racing, and want to use the lessons learned from our first couple of events to help new promoters. If you want to put on a race but aren’t sure where to start, drop me a line! I don’t have all the answers, but I’d love to help. I also like to photograph races, and contributed much of the non-stock images for the website.

My journey as a cyclist began in grade school, and it’s been an integral part of my life ever since. Growing up in Iowa, I participated in RAGBRAI multiple times, which introduced me to the joy of long-distance cycling and the camaraderie of the cycling community. Those early experiences inspired me to take my passion further.
In 2013, while living in Sioux Falls, I began racing competitively and quickly fell in love with the challenge and excitement of competition. In 2015, I moved to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, where the vibrant cycling scene offered even more opportunities to grow as a rider. While road racing remains my first love, I’ve expanded my horizons to compete in gravel, MTB, and track events.
For me, cycling is about more than just racing. It’s the thrill of pushing myself to new limits, exploring new adventures, and connecting with a community of people who share the same love for the sport. Whether I’m chasing a personal goal or enjoying a casual ride with friends, the bike is where I find my balance and joy.
When I’m not on my bike, I’m usually thinking about my next ride. And when I’m not doing that, I’m working as a project manager—partly to fund my cycling obsession!
